Communication is an art form that has come under attack by the use of technology. Don’t get me wrong, I know there is a place and time for everything. Technology makes our lives better by allowing us to connect with more people over greater distances, something that was only possible through long distance calling cards before. What was supposed to bring us closer pushed us further apart, where we are now distant and short in our conversations.
Before cable television, iPods, smartphones, text messaging and emails we talked to each other at the dinner table and played board games. So many people are missing out on the true connection that only can be built by earnest conversation; questions get answered, life stories unfold, testimonies give hope, and understanding takes place.
Every day I have great conversations with great people; some of them I know and some are strangers, but for that moment we connected. I am committed to keeping the conversations going. I started a Meet Up group called The Art of Communication in my area so that people could have the opportunity to connect with the interesting people around them. I charge you to start a conversation group in your area or if you are in the Detroit Area stop by we would love to talk!
*If you are interested in attending our group the next Meet Up will be 12 pm, March 28, 2015 at the Detroit Institute of Arts; we would love to have you.
