Obedience is Better Than Sacrifice

prayMy niece is a reserved person that prefers to be in the background. She lovingly serves others, even when they don’t know it, yet shies away from all accolades. She is a women after God’s own heart.

I was talking with her the other day and she was explaining to me how God gave her an assignment, but she was afraid to do it. This thing that God wanted her to do was out of her comfort zone and it terrified her.

She is connected to the young adult ministry in her church and during their last meeting the pastor asked what could they do to win souls for Christ. Others came up with multiple ideas, but no one said what she felt in her heart; not even her.

That thing was 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” KJV

The one thing that they forgot was prayer, seeking God’s face.

After going home, she felt a heaviness that she couldn’t get rid of. “Why didn’t I say what came over my heart?”

Every day after the meeting she kept having a nagging feeling that she should talk to the leader of their ministry, but she didn’t want to be considered “spiritual” or too forward so she put off calling him.

She finally got up the nerve to set an appointment with her leader and it was nothing like she had concocted in her mind. He was very open to hearing her suggestions, which calmed her fears.

Now I don’t how or if the leader is going to implement her suggestion. I don’t know how the other members of the ministry will take being told to pray more. What I do know is, in that moment my niece learned that “To obey is better than sacrifice,…”

In the grand scheme of things giving the suggestion to pray and ask God for help seems small. But if God is trying to teach you something, I have seen Him use the smallest things to make the biggest impact.

I know sometimes it feels like what God asks us to do is too hard, but we have to realize that we are not alone in any endeavor. The Lord promised to never leave us or forsake us. We have to remember that nothing is too hard for God and if He told us to do something, rest assured, He gave us the power to complete it.
