Go, go, go, go, go! Now, now, now, now! What’s the next thing that needs to get done? Did I forget something? Did I forget somebody? How am I doing on my to-do list? What are my social media numbers? Where am I supposed to be today? Wait what is today? I know I’m forgetting something.
The previous paragraph is a small glimpse into what happens in my head on any given day. It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is this is my day. As much as I would like to sustain this “can do” attitude forever, after a while I get burned out. My words don’t string together as poetically. Meal prep turns into food on the go. The gym visits get fewer and further apart. All I want to do is Netflix and chill by myself on the sofa.
What’s so bad about that?
We can give ourselves permission to take off the super human cap. The social media system won’t crash if we take a moment for ourselves. That statement, “You can’t pour from an empty cup” is true.
How do we expect to inspire others, if we don’t give ourselves and opportunity to be inspired?
How can we take care of others, if we don’t take care of ourselves?
It’s ok to sit and do nothing. It’s ok to recharge without having to worry about our to-do list. It’s ok to enjoy the current moment.
Now when you take on this philosophy someone is going to try and talk you out of it. When that happens remember my favorite Robert Downey Jr. quote, “Listen, smile, agree. Then do whatever the f**k you were going to do anyway.”
